I am delighted to announce the launch of the second book in the new Assignment series, featuring war correspondent Thomas Harrison, grandson of Thomas Flashman from my earlier series. Those who have read my earlier books will certainly notice some familiar personality traits.
Assignment Sudan centres on the expedition to rescue General Gordon from Khartoum – one of the most extraordinary military endeavours of the Victorian age. It pitched the elite of the British army, equipped with modern weaponry that included breech-loading rifles, artillery and machine guns, against a fanatical enemy mostly armed with swords and spears. Many, including those taking part, expected it to be a very one-sided affair. They sought a place in the relief column anticipating a jolly adventure that would earn them credit and medals, but they were in for a rude awakening!
There is also a Robert Brightwell Books/Thomas Flashman Books Facebook page that you can follow for my books. I feature pictures and other background information on the characters and events covered. The page has been running for around ten years and so there is a raft of detail on the earlier books.
Eleven books in the Thomas Flashman series have been published and they are available in print and ebook formats from a range of leading booksellers (and can be ordered in many shops that do not stock them.) They are also available as audiobooks exclusively through Audible, Amazon and iTunes. If you are not already a member of Audible, you can click here to enjoy your first book free!
Check out the other pages on this site for more information on my Thomas Flashman character – the regency uncle of Harry Flashman made famous by Thomas Hughes and George MacDonald Fraser. There is also a gallery of some of the extraordinary real-life historical characters featured in the books and some interesting source documents that you can download for free.
